Food sector in the Netherlands

The food and drink industry in the Netherlands generates around half of its revenues from overseas. Dutch exports are (historically) boosted by the country’s geographic location - in the centre of Europe - and by the increased homogenization of European consumption. It is estimated that the Dutch meat and meat products are the most important in terms of export value. The next most important sector is the dairy industry. Other vibrant clusters are: processed fruit and vegetables and juices, sugar, confectionery, coffee and tea, edible oil, non-alcoholic beverages and processed (fine) foods. The food industry production chain also includes suppliers of climate control systems, refrigeration and freezing installations, warehouse logistics, transport systems and other machinery.

The Dutch food industry is, compared to the rest of the EU, considered a leading entity in research and development and one that has some of the most efficient domestic logistical supply lines. The Netherlands has a very positive food and trade balance thanks to its large agricultural sector and advanced food processing industry.
